Wise Temple explores faith and prohibition in new “Tuesdays with Torah” series

Submitted by Wise Temple

Isaac M. Wise Temple invites the community to a three-part learning series, “Tuesdays with Torah | Jews and Booze: Making Kiddush During Prohibition,” led by Rabbi Zachary Goodman.

Taking place on Tuesdays, March 31, April 7 and April 14, 2026, from 12:00 to 1:00 p.m. at Wise Center and on Zoom, this engaging series examines the unexpected intersection of Jewish ritual and American law during the Prohibition era.

Participants will explore how Jewish communities navigated the challenges of maintaining sacred traditions such as Kiddush while federal law banned the production and distribution of alcohol. Through stories of ingenuity, legal loopholes and moral debate, the class will shed light on how rabbis, congregations and kosher wineries upheld religious life in a time of national restriction.

This unique series offers a deeper look into Jewish resilience, religious freedom and the evolving American Jewish experience.
