On Sunday, March 29, from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m., Shomrei Olam, Mill Creek Alliance (MCA) and the Jewish Federation of Cincinnati will be hosting a tree planting work party in Evendale, Ohio, along Mill Creek. The event, “Tree Planting Along the Mill Creek,” is meant to honor Tu B’Shevat, which is the Jewish New Year for Trees. The holiday was celebrated this year between February 1 and 2.

This special event, sponsored by the Jewish Federation and Shomrei Olam (Jewish Environmental Advocates for Cincinnati) intends to continue honoring the environmentally conscious Jewish holiday of Tu B’Shevat.

Tu B’Shevat originated as an agricultural festival signaling the beginning of spring, but evolved over time into a holiday that celebrates nature, tree planting and environmentalism. Those who attend this unique tree planting event will have the opportunity to celebrate the spirit of the New Year of Trees by planting trees in Evendale Commons along Mill Creek.

All are welcome to attend, and a signed waiver is required by the Mill Creek Alliance should you want to participate. You should wear clothing that is both appropriate for the weather and tree planting. Things may get muddy when you’re planting, so you’re advised to bring a second pair of shoes in case your first pair gets too dirty.

You should bring a water bottle, and snacks will be provided. Tools and work gloves will be given out, but you’re welcome to bring your own tools, like shovels, wire cutters and/or a mallet for staking. Celebrate the Jewish New Year of Trees by planting your own trees.
