Orange hits the Spot 

For those readers who keep kosher, lunch time can be a true challenge. Well, perhaps kosher lunch isn’t so much the issue as much as high quality kosher options. Well, that idea comes to an abrupt halt when you head into Orange Spot Bistro. And even if you don’t keep kosher, you can tell as you step up to the counter that this place has a wonderful menu with plenty of variegation.

To start, Orange Spot features a lengthy — even exciting — array of salad options. With seven, yes seven, salads to choose from, you can have something different every day you visit. I’m pretty traditional in my salad taste, so I’m featuring the Wedge Salad today. From the crisp, clean iceberg, to the lovely tomatoes, cucumbers, avocado and more, this salad is as pretty as it is delicious. And the “Fancy Ranch” dressing is great.

In addition to the Wedge salad, you can find Caesar, Chopped, Greek, Harvest and even a Southwest Salad. And each one is unique in presentation as contents.

Orange Spot Bistro is also  serving up sandwiches and specialty items that easily move this spot from “good kosher lunch option” to simply “good lunch option.” One special that’s sometimes offered is the salmon burger, which is terrific. Served on a soft, glossy bun, the salmon patty is flavorful and perfectly cooked, with a nice balance of seasoning that lets the fish shine through. Topped with crunchy slaw that adds just the right amount of texture and freshness, it’s a sandwich that feels hearty without being heavy.

And then there’s the grilled cheese. Sometimes the simplest items are the hardest to get right, but Orange Spot does it. The bread is beautifully toasted with that buttery golden crunch on the outside, while the cheese inside is melted to perfection, stretching with every bite in the way a great grilled cheese should. It’s comforting, rich and exactly the kind of sandwich that reminds you why classics became classics in the first place.

Of course, no lunch visit feels complete without something sweet, and the chocolate chip cookies here are absolutely worth saving room for. Thick, soft and packed with chocolate chips, they have that fresh-baked quality that makes it almost impossible to stop at just one. Slightly crisp around the edges and wonderfully chewy in the center, they’re the perfect finish to an already impressive meal.
