On Wednesday, February 18, from 3:00 p.m. to 4:30 p.m., the Mayerson JCC will be hosting a special, highly informative event on elder fraud. The event, “Protecting Our Elders,” facilitated by the Hamilton County Prosecutors Office, aims to inform anyone who attends on how to prevent elder fraud scams and help those who have already been victims of this type of crime.

On the local level, the Hamilton County Elder Justice Unite was formed in order to protect senior citizens from fraud, scams and financial exploitation. It was organized in response to one too many of Hamilton County’s senior citizens suffering significant finical harm from elder fraud, in addition to the emotional trauma they had after the crime had been committed. Tragically, elder fraud crimes are under-reported, as the victims often feel too embarrassed to report what’s happened to them or tell anyone about it.

The National Council on Aging estimate that 1 in 10 Americans over the age of 60 have experienced elder abuse, which elder fraud is a form of. “Protecting Our Elders” aims to inform, as well as help, anyone who wishes to attend.
