Walt’s Hitching Post, upscale, down home, they have it all

People know Walt’s Hitching Post as an upscale steakhouse — valet parking, an awning-covered entrance, prime beef and an impressive wine list. In fact, in a previous review of Walt’s, I focused on precisely those features because that is why so many diners love it. And deservedly so: Walt’s is a standout example of the classic steakhouse genre.

But Walt’s is also something else entirely — a well-rounded, family-friendly restaurant where you can enjoy down-home, traditional favorites. One of those, surprisingly, is fried chicken.

Years ago, I discovered something unique to our region. Everyone knows about the Bourbon Trail, but have you ever heard of the Fried Chicken Trail — sometimes called the “Winner, Winner, Chicken Dinner” Trail? Centered primarily in southeastern Indiana, it features more than 30 restaurants, many not far from Cincinnati, all serving noteworthy fried chicken. It’s well worth a weekend afternoon if you’re a fried chicken fan, as I am.

Walt’s Legendary Fried Chicken

Walt’s Hitching Post does not appear on the Fried Chicken Trail — but I wanted to find out if it should. Since you’re reading this, you can guess the answer. A resounding yes.

I visited Walt’s on an NFL playoff evening and settled into a high-top table in the bar area with a clear view of the TV. The atmosphere was comfortable and welcoming — a perfect spot to watch football, enjoy a beer and relax. Restaurant manager Stephanie greeted me warmly, and I ordered Walt’s Legendary Fried Chicken.

Beforehand, I enjoyed a fresh tossed salad with Walt’s Famous Tomato Garlic house dressing, a very nice start. With the meal, I had Walt’s home fries with onions which paired very well.

Like any good restaurant, they make the chicken to order, so you need to be a bit more patient than with other dishes. But let me assure you that it’s worth the wait.

Tossed Salad

The meal arrived as a classic half-chicken—breast, thigh, wing and leg — along with two sides. The chicken itself was excellent: crisp, well-seasoned breading and tender, juicy meat throughout. I had no trouble finishing the generous portion. As with any quality fried chicken — despite what most people say — this chicken was not at all “greasy”. In short, Walt’s Legendary Fried Chicken isn’t just Trail-worthy — it would stand out among the best.

If you usually visit Walt’s for its steaks and fine wines but are in the mood for something more casual, this restaurant is a wonderful choice. Fried chicken is only one of several comforting, home-style offerings. Whether you’re a fried chicken aficionado or simply craving a well-made, satisfying meal, Walt’s Hitching Post remains a place where the last taste lingers long after it’s gone.
