“Life is a highway,” so buckle up because it’s time to hit the road with the Chai Minded Meet Up Club on Thursday, June 20th for a fun, adventure-filled afternoon at historic Carillon Park in Dayton, a 65-acre open-air museum which contains buildings and exhibits showcasing the history and achievements of Dayton and its residents from 1796 until today.

The event is open to all “Oldies but Goodies” who are young at heart, and includes lunch in an authentic 1850s brewery, a train ride and a self-guided tour of the Early Settlement Area, featuring the Wright Brothers National Museum and Bike Shop.

Getting there will be half the fun! Less than an hour’s drive away, this Dayton Daycation destination is just a hop, skip and a jump from Cincinnati. Travelers can choose to meet up with the group at Carillon Park at 11 a.m. or better yet, they can join the Chai Minded Carpool Convoy, which will depart from Blue Ash promptly at 10 a.m.

Participants who have extra space in their cars can volunteer to drive those who prefer to be passengers, providing yet another great way to make some new friends! More details will follow and drivers and riders will be matched up after they’ve RSVP’d.

Once at the park, day trippers will enjoy lunch in a private space at the Carillon Brewing Company built in 1850 and the nation’s only brewery replicating the historic brewing process. A representative from the brewery will speak with the group about the history of the building and how the beer is made exactly as it was two centuries ago. It will also include a brief tour through the facility for those who are interested.

After lunch, participants will take a narrated circle tour in an open-air 1951 replica locomotive. It will be followed by a self-guided walk through the Early Settlement Area where tourists can go at their own pace while exploring the Wright Brothers National Museum and Bike Shop, the Heritage Center, a tavern, schoolhouse, print shop, historic houses and more, some dating back as far as 1796. There, visitors will be treated to period demonstrations such as candle-dipping, gardening, hearth-cooking, quilting, sewing, musket firing, blacksmithing, woodworking, and more.

The cost of the event includes a discounted entry fee of $11/person and $5/person to ride the locomotive. Each participant is responsible for covering the cost of their own lunch and snacks. The park closes at 5 p.m. To RSVP and volunteer to be a driver or request a ride, go to the Chai Minded website. The event is sponsored in part thanks to the generosity of the American Israelite.

The Chai Minded Meet Up Club is a grassroots group whose mission is to have fun, meet friends and make some noise. Events are open to Jewish adults living independently. Non-Jewish partners, spouses and friends are always welcome.
