I had the incredible privilege of spending time with Rabbi Malkiel Kotler, a towering figure in the Torah world, during his visit to Cincinnati, OH. Rabbi Kotler came to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the Cincinnati Community Kollel, where he was an invited guest. What began as a simple task of driving him to Golf Manor Synagogue on Friday afternoon turned into an unforgettable opportunity to engage with a man whose wisdom, warmth and humility left a lasting impact on me.
Following in the steps of his illustrious father Rabbi Schneur Kotler zt’l and Grandfather Rabbi Aharon Kotler zt’l Rabbi Malkiel leads Beth Medrash Govoha, the world’s largest Rabbinical seminary located in Lakewood, NJ. Following the passing of his father, Rabbi Schneur Kotler, in 1982. Rabbi Schneur Kotler, zt”l, was the son of the legendary Rabbi Aharon Kotler, zt”l, who founded Beis Medrash Gevoah and revolutionized Torah learning in America after World War II. Under the leadership of Rabbi Malkiel Kotler Beth Medrash Gevoha has continued to grow into the largest and one of the most prestigious Torah institutions in the world.
As I drove Rabbi Kotler to the Golf Manor Synagogue, I couldn’t help but feel a deep sense of reverence. This was a man whose family legacy has had an immeasurable impact on the world of Torah learning and Jewish leadership. Our conversation began with the usual pleasantries — discussing the week’s parsha, current events in the Jewish world, and some of the challenges facing the community. But as the drive continued, I was struck by Rabbi Kotler’s ability to take profound ideas and make them relatable and accessible. He spoke with a clarity that not only reflected his deep knowledge but also his deep care for the people he was engaging with.
Rabbi Kotler’s insights on Torah learning and Jewish life were not abstract theories but practical lessons for living a Torah-based life. He emphasized the importance of balance — how Torah study should permeate every aspect of one’s life, from personal relationships to professional endeavors. He also stressed the value of building a strong community, where each individual has the opportunity to grow spiritually while contributing to the collective strength of the group.
A Personal Blessing: Words of Advice and Encouragement
As we neared the shul, our conversation became more personal. I shared with Rabbi Kotler that I am a Baal Teshuva, someone who has come to Judaism later in life. Rabbi Kotler listened attentively, offering thoughtful and sincere words of advice. He reminded me that the journey of Teshuva is a path of growth, not perfection, and that every small step I take has immense value in Hashem’s eyes. His words resonated deeply with me and gave me renewed strength to continue my spiritual journey with perseverance and faith.
Before we reached the shul, Rabbi Kotler gave me a heartfelt blessing, asking Hashem to grant me success in both my spiritual growth and in my personal and professional endeavors. It wasn’t just a blessing — it felt like a sincere prayer from someone deeply connected to Hashem. I left that conversation feeling uplifted, knowing that his words would continue to guide me on my path.
The Kollel has been a source of support and inspiration for me, and it was a great honor to have Rabbi Kotler present for such a significant occasion in the Kollel’s history. As a time to honor an institution that nourishes and nurtures Torah learning, helping individuals grow spiritually and personally.
As we arrived at the shul, I felt a profound sense of gratitude for the time I had spent with Rabbi Kotler. What started as a simple favor, driving him to the synagogue, turned into a life-changing encounter. I walked away not just with practical advice but with a deepened sense of purpose and direction in my personal journey of Teshuva. Rabbi Kotler’s wisdom, his heartfelt blessing, and his humble demeanor left a lasting impression on me — one that I will carry with me as I continue on my spiritual path.
This experience was a reminder of the transformative power of Torah learning, community, and leadership. It was an experience that touched my heart and strengthened my resolve to continue growing in Torah and in faith, grateful for the opportunities that lie ahead.
