On Saturday, January 10, from 6:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., Wise Temple will be hosting an exciting new event, “Scholar-in-Residence | Rebecca Soffer: An Evening to Discuss Modern Loss.” This Havdalah event will be presented by Rebecca Soffer, a co-founder of Modern Loss, an online community where people are able to share and learn about grieving and loss. She is also the best-selling author of “The Modern Loss Handbook: An Interactive Guide to Moving Through Grief and Building Your Resilience.”

“The Modern Loss Handbook” was published in 2022 to good reviews and high praise from the likes of famous media personalities like Stephen Colbert and Gayle King. Soffer’s book is about how one navigates grief and the stigma that often surrounds it. And, as part of Soffer’s book’s subtitle, “An Interactive Guide,” suggests, her book invites active participation from its readers through prompts, creative projects, therapeutic exercises and a number of other unique methods.

Soffer earned a masters in journalism from Columbia University and was once able to tag along with Stephen Colbert to get to know all 435 U.S. Representatives. She has also helped develop a leading network of Jewish creatives, which aligns with her philosophy that there is far more strength in numbers.

She has written pieces for publications like “Time” and “The New York Times,” and has participated in popular TV programs like “CBS Sunday Morning” and “CBS Mornings.” She has also given many talks over the years and has led workshops at events like “End Well Symposium.”
