The Mayerson JCC 60 & Better group is hosting a workshop for older adults titled A Matter of Balance. These workshops are aimed at older adults who have a higher risk of sustaining injuries from falling. Often, the fear of a failing injury can limit physical activity. Muscle weakness from reduced activity can actually increase the risk of fall injuries, and the Matter of Balance Workshop is seeking to remedy this issue and highlight ways that older adults can increase physical activity. According to the National Institutes of Heath (NIH), 20% of falls in senior populations result in a series injury and 800,000 seniors require hospitalization after such injuries. The NIH recommends the building of strength, balance and endurance in order to prevent injuries such as this.
The J’s Matter of Balance Workshop includes eight two-hour sessions where adults will learn flexibility, how to increase activity and other ways to gain strength and prevent falling injuries.
Information about the workshop can be found on the Mayerson JCC website.
