AJC Cincinnati looks forward to proudly presenting John Stein with its 2023 Community Service Award during a reception on Wednesday, November 29, 5:30pm, at the Mayerson JCC.
In recognition of his exceptional social vision and esteemed leadership in the Jewish and greater Cincinnati community, AJC is delighted to honor John as the 41st recipient of this prestigious award. Inspired by the values of compassion, empathy and tikkun olam, helping repair the world, John has demonstrated his unwavering activism to shape a brighter Jewish future and uphold the tenets of our democracy.
Following in the footsteps of his grandfather and mother, John joined the local AJC board in 2005 as a third generation AJC leader. He was President of the Cincinnati office from 2010-2012 and helped steer the organization as a member of the AJC Board of Governors from 2009 to 2015. He is currently chairperson of The Jewish Foundation of Cincinnati and has previously served on the Board of Governors of HUC-JIR 2012-2022 (Chair of Investment Committee), the Natan Fund 2013-16, and the Mayerson JCC (VP 2005-2011). Additionally, he serves as the Treasurer of the Immigrant Refugee Law Center and previously served as Treasurer of the Cincinnati Playhouse in the Park (2014-2021).
Professionally, John is co-founder and Principal of Five Stones Investment Group. Prior to that, he was co-founder and President of FSI Group LLC, a registered investment advisor with a specialization in the Financial Services sector. Between 1995 and 2020, he was the co-portfolio manager of that firm’s equity hedge funds and its six private equity funds. He also spent time working in banking and management consulting.
John is a proud product of the Cincinnati Jewish community; an alum of JCC Pre-school, Yavneh (Rockwern) Day school, and Wise Temple religious school. A lifelong congregant at Wise and JCC member, he and his family have been deeply involved with Jewish Cincinnati. Having been so enriched by Jewish life, John has felt a profound obligation to pay it forward, so that future generations can enjoy a thriving, supportive, and vibrant Jewish community.
He is a graduate of the University of Chicago, lives in Amberley with his wife Jennifer and has three children: Kate, Peter, and Michael.
