In the Beginning: 1855
Each week The American Israelite will print an item from the first years.
The Rev. Dr. Adler of Worms. — Rabbi L. Stein of Frankfort informs us, that the above mentioned learned divine, is confined in a lunatic asylum. He suffered under mental derangement, in consequence of the ill treatment he has received from the government. When will those hyenas be satiated with human blood?

Local and Domestic
– All resolutions, society, or congregational advertisements, betrothal and marriage notices, must be paid in advance. No notice will be taken of either if not accompanied by the pre-payment.
– As usual, Purim has been celebrated by festivities of all kinds. We have received numerous reports of balls, parties, concerts, etc., but can not spare the space to insert them. Large sums of money have been realized for the benefit of various charitable institutions, and Purim has given enjoyment to rich and poor alike.
Foreign Record
– The French National Assembly have passed a clause in the bill for regulating religious services in the army, according to which a Jewish minister is to be attached to every group of soldiers containing more than 200 Jews.
– Dr. Lazurus, of Berlin, has been decorated with the Prussian Order of the Crown, in recognition of his services during the epidemic which raged there last year.
– Amsterdam. — Two members of congress ,professors of the Catholic creed, have recently allowed themselves very hard language against the Jews. This made such a bad effect on the whole congress that one of those orators has found himself compelled to resign his position.

It would be well if the founders of new Jewish organization would bear in mind that the best class of Jews have decided that “Jewish,” not “Hebrew” is the proper designation. It would also be wise if those Jewish bodies now erroneously known as “Hebrew”would proceed as expeditiously as may be to have their names changed. Our coreligionists wish to be known only as Americans who profess Judaism, and therefore whenever it becomes desirable to distinguish them or their institutions as a separate sect or as sectarian “Jews” and “Jewish” are the only proper designations.
Jottings
– Rabbi Abraham Simon of Sacramento, Ca., was elected Rabbi of Omaha, Neb. He was five years and his post in Sacramento, and gave full satisfaction to his congregation and the citizens generally. We congratulate.
– At the Conference of American Rabbis held at Cincinnati last week, the unanimous opinion was against Zionism. When the chairman asked for someone to speak for Zionism, nobody came forward. The anti-Zionist papers of. Drs. Berkowitz and Sale were most heartily applauded by the audience.
– The war in the New York Presbytery between Herman Warzawik and Dr. A. F. Schauffler, the rival missionary to the Jews, has broken out afresh, and the charges and countercharges are something terrible. If the one half of them would be true, a prison would be a more fitting place for either than the pulpit. But then these two probably know each other.
– Rabbi M. Magill has resigned his position of rabbi of the congregation at Ligonier, Ind.
– At Chester, Pa., the Jewish social club and the Jewish congregation have been merged into one. This is a new departure.

From all accounts it may be accepted as fact that the Ku Klux is a waning Klan, and before long will be merely a matter of American history. When this comes to be written, however, none will have more cause for regret than those Protestant clergymen who allowed themselves to become identified with the Klan, some even going so far as to stultify themselves by accepting the few dollars that were publicly donated to them by the K.K.’s.
– “Incidentally,” says the Oil City Blizzard, “if Congress wants some data for its propaganda probe, we can give it two or three waste basketfuls a day to work on.” The Israelite echoes this very heartily.
About People
– H.F. Arthur Schoenfeld, the first Secretary to the American Embassy at Vienna, has been appointed to the post of Counselor of the American Embassy in Mexico.
– Representative Julius Kahn, Chairman of the House Military Affairs Committee, was too ill to leave the ship President Polk when it arrived in Havana, March 10. Congressman Kahn is on his way to his home in California.
– The Institute of France has now sixteen Jewish members. The latest addition is M. Georges Benedite, the conservator at the Louvre Museum, in charge of the Egyptian Department and the author of numerous works dealing with Egyptian archaeology.
