“New and very popular” is how Carin Solganik of All The Best Deli describes the eatery’s breakfast offering, instituted recently, running from 7 to 11 a.m., daily. “We don’t do breakfast all day long, but we do have some of the items from breakfast on the menu all day long.” Those items are the corned beef hash topped with poached eggs, and the French toast made from sliced challah bread. The two items are available at any time and happen to be the most popular items among breakfast patrons.
Solganik indicated that everyone at the deli is pleased at how well the breakfast offering has gone over with patrons. The deli breakfast menu features eggs just about any style, along with omelets, bagels and nova, and a variety of special breakfast treats that harken to the Jewish household in which she was raised. One of these specialties is scrambled eggs and salami, which she says is a personal favorite made all the more special because her father used to make it for her way back when.
An advantage for Jewish diners-out who wish to eat kosher style is that All The Best deli features a scratch kitchen, meaning they can hold or add just about anything. For instance, among the most popular omelets at the deli is the Reuben omelet. It’s true, sauerkraut for breakfast! “People don’t realize how good it is until they try this omelet,” she said. But nix on corned beef and Swiss cheese, right? No can do. So kosher diners may simply hold the Swiss. The omelet features kraut and Russian dressing along with the corned beef, all in the egg wrapper. Sounds both interesting and delicious to me. Other omelets include one featuring the deli’s corned beef hash, and a veggie omelet, loaded with mushrooms, onion, red bell pepper and cheddar-jack cheese.
The bagel and nova breakfast selection might need explanation. So, Jewish diners out may think, innately perhaps, that bagels and lox is what you get when eating smoked salmon on a bagel, maybe with cream cheese, capers and onion. But no. No! Lox actually is salt-cured salmon with a very assertive taste — almost overpowering, according to folks who know. Lox involves no smoking of the fish whatsoever — only a slow salt cure. Nova (geographically named after Nova Scotia) is cold-smoked salmon, which means the temp of the smoking chamber is 85°F or lower. The silky, smokey, sliceable texture of this salmon is attained by the slow smoking process. Now you know.
Having celebrated its first-year anniversary in June, Solganik said the deli received a surprise kudo recently. “We got nominated and voted to the list of America’s best restaurants. They (America’s Best Restaurants.Com) came out and filmed here. They go around the country and look for really unique and interesting restaurants, and we got voted one of the best (in the Dayton area),” she said. Hats off to All The Best Deli!
Having logged a year in operation, Solganik said a new menu item has emerged to accommodate those who want a sandwich but want something less than the over-stuffed giants for which Jewish delis are renown. “So, we are rolling out a new line of sandwiches called the Besties. These sandwiches are served on a grilled challah knot. They come with Swiss cheese (hold the cheese, please), cole slaw, and Russian dressing. And you choose the meat, corned beef, pastrami, brisket or turkey — our turkey is incredible! We wanted a little bit smaller of a sandwich, because not everybody wants the giant over-stuffed sandwiches. We’re coming out with a Besties Burger which we’re adding” as well.
One reason All The Best Deli is flying high might be its kitchen. “The salads, the potato pancakes, the soups, all are made from scratch in our (the deli’s) kitchen. Our chicken soup, we make our own stock, and make our own chicken soup (from that house-made stock). Our potato pancakes are incredible. We do it all and squeeze out the water (from the shredded potatoes) and use the (potato-starched) water to thicken it — very old school. The pancakes are crispy and a bit thicker too. They are very good,” she stated.
So, too, the French fries, which she said are hand-cut, soaked in water before frying, and double-fried for extra-crispy fries that are hot and soft on the inside. Take it from me: if you have not tried double-fried French fries, and you enjoy a good fry, you’re in for a treat.
The deli is located on the south side of Dayton, just off the I-675 circle freeway, not far from I-75, at 5940 Far Hills Avenue, 45429.
See you at All The Best Deli!
