Adath Israel Congregation will celebrate its 175th birthday on Sunday, June 8, from 6:00 – 9:00 at the synagogue.
Adath Israel was founded in 1847 and is one of the oldest Conservative congregations in the United States. While the synagogue was first located in what is now downtown Cincinnati, it moved several times in its history before settling down on Reading Road in 1927.
One year later, in 1928, Adath established the Leshner Library of Jewish Books. At that time, books on topics related to Judaica were often only available through universities such as HUC and the University of Cincinnati. Adath’s development of its own library made Judaica and education about Jewish life more accessible to Jews who were not involved in the educational system here in Cincinnati.
The synagogue moved to Amberley Village in 1967 and in 1972, the Jarson Education Center was built next door.
This 175 year celebration of Adath Israel congregation will honor Rabbi Smolkin, who is moving to Los Angeles. The event will also welcome and celebrate Rabbi Shafrin as he begins his role as Senior Rabbi at Adath Israel.
