Pirkei Avot, ethics of our ancestors

The Mayerson JCC’s 60 & Better Center will offer members an opportunity to explore timeless Jewish wisdom through a new class centered on Pirkei Avot, also known as “Ethics of Our Ancestors” or “Ethics of the Fathers.”

Designed as a reflective and discussion-based learning experience, the program will guide participants through the teachings of Pirkei Avot, a classic collection of Jewish ethical writings and moral teachings rooted in Rabbinic tradition. Organizers say the class will focus on themes including character, relationships, purpose and living one’s values in everyday life.

Pirkei Avot holds a unique place in Jewish learning. Unlike many other sections of the Mishnah that focus heavily on Jewish law, Pirkei Avot is devoted almost entirely to ethics, wisdom and personal conduct. The text traces the transmission of the Oral Torah from Moses through generations of prophets and sages while presenting short teachings and reflections from prominent rabbinic figures.

The class is also tied to the spiritual period of the Omer, the seven-week period between Passover and Shavuot traditionally associated with personal growth and self-refinement. Through text study and group conversation, participants will have the opportunity to connect ancient teachings with modern life and personal experiences.

Organizers note that no prior background in Jewish text study is necessary to participate. The program is intended to welcome anyone interested in thoughtful conversation, learning and community engagement.

The event is open exclusively to members of the Mayerson JCC and/or the 60 & Better Center.
