On Sunday, May 3 at 4:30 p.m., Adath Israel Sisterhood will hold their annual Torah Fund event in Adath Israel’s Marcus Chapel. This year they will have an “afternoon tea” where they will honor Lisa Kadosh for her contributions to Sisterhood and Adath Israel Congregation. Torah Fund supports scholarships and programming at the five Conservative and Masorti movement seminaries around the world. These include The Jewish Theological Seminary in New York, Ziegler School of Rabbinic Studies in Los Angeles, Schechter Institutes of Jewish Studies in Jerusalem, Seminario Rabinico Latinoamericano in Buenos Aires, and The Abraham J. Heschel Seminary in Potsdam.

Adath’s Torah Fund Chair, Cathy Bowers, said, “Our Torah Fund honoree is chosen every year by the Adath Israel Sisterhood board from a slate of nominees that Sisterhood members put forward. Many of our members nominated Lisa Kadosh, who is currently serving as the Immediate Past President of the Board. Before she took on the role of President, she served as financial secretary. She is a leader who is always full of energy, excitement, and new ideas, and works hard to make everyone feel included. In addition to her work with our local Sisterhood Board, she is active at the regional and national level of the Women’s League for Conservative Judaism, and she has helped organize the Adath Thanksgiving food drive and the Green Team, which focuses on environmental issues. She is clearly a very busy woman, but also always makes time to reach out to others, to get them involved or just to check in and see how they are doing. We are very excited to be honoring her.”

Lisa Kadosh was born in Cleveland, and when she was in 3rd grade, her family made Aliyah to Israel. When she was in 6th grade, they moved back to Cleveland. She lived in the U.S. until she graduated from Ohio State in 1996. After graduation, she moved to Israel where she met her husband David. They have been married for 28 years and have three children. For the last 7 years, Lisa has worked as lead technologist and technical director of the vascular lab at Jewish Hospital in Kenwood.

This year’s event theme is “Oseh Shalom (Maker of Peace).” Adath Israel Sisterhood wrote, “Oseh Shalom suggests we actively work for peace in our lives, our communities, and for the State of Israel. In challenging times, a positive perspective encourages action rather than passive despair. Ways to work towards peace include using empathy to see the “divine spark” in others and building bridges to seek common ground and understanding. We can find personal peace by creating a sense of calm, comforting the bereaved, and accepting help from others so they feel the joy in doing good and then bring healing to themselves.”

The Sisterhood Torah Fund committee includes Mikey Frank, Stella Fried, Rebecca Goldwasser, Trinity Johnson, Debbie Lempert, Marlene Ostrow, Sue Pressman, Gilda Schwartz, Heidi Weisman and Chair Cathy Bowers.
