Café Alma

Some restaurants are easy to categorize. You go in knowing exactly what you’re going to get, and more often than not, you’re right. Cafe Alma is not one of those places.

Tucked into the inviting neighborhood of Pleasant Ridge, Café Alma has built a reputation for fresh, health-conscious cuisine — but to leave it at that would be to undersell what’s really happening in the kitchen. Yes, the ingredients are thoughtfully sourced and the menu leans toward the nutritious side of the spectrum. But what keeps people coming back is something less easily labeled: a quiet confidence in execution, and a willingness to elevate even the simplest ideas.

On a recent visit, I decided to focus on a dish that captures that balance perfectly: the Salmon Piccata.

At first glance, the plate is striking in its simplicity. A beautifully seared salmon fillet rests atop a generous bed of rice studded with chickpeas, kale and red peppers. But a closer look reveals the care in every detail. The salmon itself is cooked just right — its exterior carries a well-developed, lightly crisped crust, while the interior remains moist and tender. That contrast alone makes the dish worthwhile.

What truly defines the plate, however, is the lemon pepper caper sauce. Piccata, by nature, depends on balance, and Café Alma gets it exactly right. The brightness of the lemon cuts cleanly through the richness of the fish, while the capers add bursts of briny intensity that keep each bite lively. It’s a combination that feels both classic and refreshingly modern.

Beneath the salmon, the rice mixture is far more than a supporting player. The chickpeas bring a subtle nuttiness and added texture, the kale contributes an earthy depth and the red peppers lend just enough sweetness to round things out. Taken together, the base transforms what could have been a straightforward entrée into a layered, satisfying composition.

This is where Café Alma quietly distinguishes itself. Many restaurants can prepare a good piece of fish. Fewer take the time to ensure that every component on the plate works in harmony. Here, nothing feels like an afterthought.

Of course, one of the restaurant’s enduring strengths is its versatility. Regulars already know they can stop in for an excellent breakfast — bagels, eggs and dishes like the NJB(enedict) remain standouts. There are lighter fare options, indulgent treats like challah French toast and even heartier selections that satisfy more traditional cravings. But the Salmon Piccata is a reminder that Café Alma excels just as much when it leans into composed, entrée-driven cooking.

In a dining landscape often divided between “healthy” and “comforting,” Café Alma continues to blur the line. This dish, in particular, manages to feel both nourishing and deeply satisfying — no compromises required.

So whether you’re already a regular or just looking for a reason to explore Pleasant Ridge, consider this your invitation. Order the salmon. Take your time. Because Cafe Alma is a place where the last taste lingers long after it’s gone.
