The American Israelite is proud to announce our new columnist, Joan Wyler.
I am pleased to become a new contributing member of The American Israelite. By combining my experience in the behavioral health profession with my journalism skills, I will share with you a new column called Parenting Plus. This column should help you navigate the challenging role as a parent, grandparent, caregiver or simply a friend. Parenting Plus should enrich the lives of those with whom you interact by offering stimulating ideas, fun activities and helpful resources. The suggested activities with your family and friends will help you gain confidence and increase your enjoyment in performing your respective roles.
From my forty years of experience in the behavioral health field, I will share the “dos” and “don’ts” of parenting. During my employment at the Talbert House organization, I held the position of Coordinator of COPE (Community/Outreach/Prevention and Education) Program which coordinated community organizations to provide prevention services throughout Hamilton County. As a participant on community committees such as Greater Cincinnati Latino Coalition, LGBTQ+ Committee, Hamilton County Suicide Prevention Collaborative, We Thrive, Hopeful Empowered Youth and the First Ladies Health Days different populations’ viewpoints and solutions can be reflected. Prior to these community roles, I taught youth at Yavneh School and Walnut Hills High School. The implementation of grant programs at Xavier, Cincinnati State and Mount Saint Joseph enables hearing voices of university students. Similarly, I wrote a weekly Enquirer column “Healthy Mind” and Cincinnati Magazine features as platforms for sharing family related ideas. In addition to the written word, speaking engagements at schools, religious institutions and conferences provided an opportunity for dialogue.
My husband and I have lived, worked and raised our family in Cincinnati. Our son and daughter reside on the East and West coasts respectively with our four grandchildren in different cities throughout the United States. The Parenting Plus column will share my intimate knowledge of activities and resources in the Tri-State area as well as the challenges of maintaining ties with loved ones in distant cities. Hopefully you will find Parenting Plus useful and fun to read. I welcome your suggestions and questions.
