From a small group of students performing short plays to a full-scale musical production, Theatre at the J has quickly become one of the most exciting and fast-growing programs at the Mayerson JCC. This spring, the program is set to take another magical leap forward with its upcoming May production of Disney’s Frozen JR.

With shows on Wednesday, May 14 and Thursday, May 15 at 7 p.m., and a live-captioned Sunday matinee on May 18 at 2 p.m., this heartwarming musical promises to bring the enchanting world of Arendelle to life through the voices of Theatre at the J’s talented young performers. The run time is around 60 minutes and tickets are reasonably priced, making it a perfect outing for families.

Eliana Rantz, director and producer of Theatre at the J, shared insights into the program’s growth and what audiences can look forward to in the upcoming production. “We started the program with less than 12 students across two classes,” Rantz shared. “Now we serve more than 50 participants in three different classes.”

Theatre at the J has evolved into a vibrant and ambitious program tackling full-scale Disney JR. musicals. Each production strengthens the sense of community among participants.

“There’s been tremendous growth — not just in the quality of the productions, but in how invested the kids and families are,” Rantz said.

The choice to stage Frozen JR. was an intentional one, blending creativity, emotional resonance and widespread appeal. “Disney has a place in a lot of people’s hearts — both young and old,” Rantz explained. “Frozen is a captivating story with unique characters and an unforgettable soundtrack. It follows the journey of two sisters and redefines what love is.”

Adapted from the 2018 Broadway musical and the iconic animated film, Frozen JR. features music and lyrics by Kristen Anderson-Lopez and Robert Lopez and a book by Jennifer Lee. The story follows sisters Elsa and Anna as they navigate love, fear and identity amid a kingdom trapped in eternal winter.

For Rantz, the highlight of this production is seeing the students truly shine. “What excites me most is for the audience to witness the incredible dedication and hard work these students have invested in the show,” she said. “Their individual growth, along with their ability to come together and perform as a cohesive ensemble, is truly inspiring.”

She also emphasized the broader impact the program has had on the young performers. “Our program allows people to be their authentic selves. It builds confidence and self-esteem. It’s educational and empowering. Some parents have even said this experience has been life changing for their child.”

Whether it’s the iconic songs like “Let It Go” and “Do You Want to Build a Snowman,” the beloved characters, or the powerful message of sisterhood, Frozen JR. is sure to captivate audiences of all ages. Behind every note and scene is a collaborative community of young artists whose creativity and teamwork have transformed this production into something truly special.
