Block’s Bagels of Columbus and Marx Bagels of Blue Ash, are proud to announce a historic collaboration to preserve and carry forward their shared legacy.
Following the recent passing of Hal Block and the closure of Block’s Bagels on March 2, 2025, Marx Bagels will take the helm of the beloved East Side institution, ensuring its rich tradition lives on. A swift mini-renovation of the Columbus location is underway, with plans to reopen in early April under the Marx Bagels banner. The transition will blend Block’s cherished nostalgia with Marx Bagels’ commitment to an authentic kosher bagel experience, delighting longtime fans and welcoming new customers.
Founded in 1967 by Columbus legend Hal Block, Block’s Bagels became a staple in Central Ohio, eventually expanding to Cincinnati. The Cincinnati location was later sold to John Marx, whose ‘wonderful & wacky’ approach built Marx Bagels into a beloved institution over many decades, before selling the business in 2019. Now, in 2025, this passing of the torch brings the story full circle, uniting the two brands once again.
YY Davis, current owner of Marx Bagels, expressed his deep appreciation: “I’m incredibly grateful to the Block family for this opportunity and for their tireless efforts in making this transition seamless. I had the honor of knowing Hal Block — a truly remarkable man — and his grandsons, Jake and Jason Block, who have become dear friends. Our hope is to honor Hal’s memory, as well as that of Audrey and Steve Block, by continuing to serve the Columbus community with an authentic kosher bagel experience.”
Jason Block, Hal Block’s grandson added: “Our family is delighted to continue Hal’s legacy of serving fresh, kosher bagels and fostering a welcoming gathering place for the community by passing the torch to Marx Bagels. With Hal having founded both locations in the 1960s, this transition feels like a natural fit and an exciting next chapter for Columbus bagels. It was essential to us that whoever carried this legacy forward embodied integrity, cared deeply about customers and employees, and upheld the highest standards of quality. YY and the Marx team are the perfect fit, and Central Ohio is fortunate to have them at the helm.”

About Marx Bagels
Marx Bagels, based in Blue Ash, Ohio, rose to prominence under John Marx, who carried forward Hal Block’s legacy nearly 60 years ago, and has remained a Cincinnati staple for decades. John Marx — a Catholic — maintained a 100% kosher menu throughout, with items such as the Tuna Rueben, becoming favorites in place of meats. This along with the 16 flavors of cream cheese, lox sandwiches and more, simultaneously catered to vegetarian needs.
Since 2019, YY and Rena Davis have owned and operated the business, upholding its high standards of quality and tradition. Now, with this expansion to Columbus, Marx Bagels remains dedicated to crafting exceptional bagels while honoring its rich history, and serving the community with fresh, flavorful bagels and a warm, communal atmosphere.
