Letter to the Editor: December 12, 2024

Dear Editor,

I just read the wonderful article about the Theater at the J and I agree with how wonderful the acting experience is for our children’s confidence, social skills and sense of belonging. As an “old” parent of acting students at the J, I want to acknowledge the original Theater at the J in the early 1990s. Our sons were very involved with the Theater at the J at the old JCC building in Roselawn. The wonderful acting director and program planner for the Theater at the J then was Marlene Shmalo. We continue to replay all of our old videos of the many plays Marlene (and her mom) created and directed. We are so glad the “new” J is offering this opportunity because our sons so benefitted from this wonderful experience! As an “old parent” I just want to clarify that Theater at the J is definitely wonderful for our children and I hope that appropriate credit be given to our original director Marlene Shmalo for her tireless creative work over so many years!

Thank you,
