The 26th annual Voices of Giving event, held on June 20 at the Greater Cincinnati Foundation’s atrium, celebrated individuals who have made an indelible mark on our community. This prestigious event by the Greater Cincinnati Planned Giving Council honors legacy donors whose generosity ensures the sustainability and growth of nonprofit organizations throughout Greater Cincinnati.

Among the inspiring honorees were Fred and Karen Abel, whose dedication and philanthropy have profoundly impacted the Jewish community. Their recognition at this event highlights not only their personal contributions but also the importance of legacy giving in assuring a vibrant Jewish future in Cincinnati.

A Legacy of Generosity

Fred and Karen Abel have significantly impacted the Jewish Federation by supporting initiatives that ensure a vibrant and engaged Jewish community. Their contributions span areas such as community engagement, education, and caring for those in need. Their efforts have inspired others and set a powerful example of philanthropy and involvement.

To ensure their work continues to support the Jewish community, Fred and Karen made the strategic decision to allocate a portion of their IRA for a legacy gift. This choice is particularly beneficial because it can be more tax-efficient, maximizing the impact of their donation. Their careful planning creates a lasting source of support that will benefit the Jewish community for many years to come, reinforcing their commitment to the community’s strength and vitality well into the future.

Dedication and Leadership: Karen Abel

“It is our hope that this legacy gift sets an example for our children and grandchildren, that we all have a responsibility in each generation to ensure that those who benefit from the many agencies supported by the Jewish Federation will continue to receive help in the years to come. It has been our pleasure and honor to be part of the Jewish Federation of Cincinnati’s work, and we hope others will follow our lead,” said Karen Abel.

Karen Abel’s contributions are impactful. Awarded the prestigious Clara Greller Award, Karen’s leadership in the Women’s Philanthropy division is exemplary. She has been instrumental in planning major Federation gala dinners and events, and her recognition as a Lion of Judah underscores her commitment. By endowing her annual gift, Karen ensures her legacy of support endures indefinitely, continuing to inspire and empower future generations.

Roots of Commitment: Fred Abel

Fred Abel’s journey with the Jewish Federation spans over three decades, during which he has been a cornerstone of leadership and philanthropy. Serving on the Jewish Federation Board for over 30 years, including a term as Vice President, Fred’s influence is vast. He chaired the Major Gifts portion of the annual campaign twice and was a committed solicitor for over 40 years. His passion extended to the allocations committee, where he played a crucial role in grant disbursements from the Annual Campaign funds. Moreover, Fred demonstrated tremendous leadership at Jewish Vocational Service (now JVS Careers), where he served as Board member and past President. While volunteering with JVS Careers, Fred chaired the Hilb Scholarship Fund Committee, which is an endowment established with the help of the Jewish Federation, and which has provided financial assistance to hundreds of students.

Ken and Carrie Goldhoff, nominated by ArtsWave, are dedicated volunteers and supporters of the Jewish Federation and several community agencies. Their commitment to giving back is deeply personal and impactful. As Ken Goldhoff shared, “We participate in ArtsWave as donors and volunteers because I never forget that my own family was the recipient of the kindness of our community’s generous support for many generations. It’s a privilege to be able to pay it forward so future generations are able to participate in arts experiences that our family has so deeply enjoyed.”

The Goldhoffs have established legacy commitments to the Federation that assure the vibrancy of our community. Their involvement spans various causes and organizations, reflecting their broad commitment to enhancing community life. Their dedication serves as an inspiration to others, demonstrating how legacy giving can profoundly affect the community’s future.
