Growing old gracefully might be a virtue, but living life out loud is a lot more fun! This sentiment is one that seems to be shared by a growing number of Americans, 65 and over, who now make up one sixth of the US population. Not only are they living longer, but they’re also looking for new ways to keep “living it up” along the way. That means the demand for more programs that meet their unique needs is now greater than ever before.
While aging in place and remaining independent has become the new normal, it can also be isolating and lonely. But now, thanks to a brand-new grassroots group called the Chai Minded Meetup Club, there’s another great option for anyone in the Cincinnati Jewish community looking to have fun, meet friends and make some noise!
Whether they’re a member of a congregation, participate peripherally in community programs, or none of the above, the Chai Minded Meetup Club is open to all “Oldies but Goodies” who are young at heart.
The program was started by about a dozen people from around the Jewish community who were looking for fun, out-of-the-box social opportunities for retired couples and singles who live independently.
“Because the club isn’t associated with any particular congregation or organization, there are no membership requirements that limit who can participate, and no restrictions as to when and where our activities take place,” explains Vic Amster, one of the group’s founders. “This also provides a great opportunity for folks from different denominations to get to know one another and offers a great option for those looking for a hurdle-free way to participate in Jewish life.”
Based on the interests of its constituents, the group will be planning at least one event, outing, or day trip each month, and hopes to increase its programming as more people join in on the fun. Participants are encouraged to contribute their ideas, and those who are interested can help plan future functions together, another great way to make new friends.
The Chai Minded Meetup Club’s first event, Dine and Rewind will kick off on Wednesday, March 6th at 12 p.m., with lunch in a private room at the Firehouse Grill in Blue Ash, followed by the 50s and 60s Flashback Trivia Challenge. From Howdy Doody and the Hula Hoop, to TV dinners, bobby socks and the birth of Rock and Roll, guests will team up for a walk down Memory Lane to see how much they remember from the good ol’ days as they compete for “fabulous prizes” and most of all, bragging rights!
Guests can order lunch from the Firehouse Grill menu and top it all off with a Coke or root beer float, made especially for the event. Plus — there will be plenty of penny candy and other sweet treats from back in the day. While there is no charge to participate in the program, participants will be responsible for covering the cost of their own lunch and gratuity.
The Dine and Rewind event is open to adults in the Jewish community living independently. Non-Jewish friends are welcome. Space is limited to the first 75 people to RSVP by going to Chai Minded Meetup dot org and filling out the form. Reservations will be available on a first-come-first-served basis.
